George V (1865-1936)
Profile; head and shoulders looking left. The King wears the Crown of India and the insignia of the Indian Orders.
Plaster model; diameter 11 ins (29 cms)
Model for design on the new Indian currency rupee on accession of George V.
Commissioned by the Financial Department for the Government of India
The model was approved by the King on 4 April 1911 and his Private Secretary informed Mackennal that the King thought it ‘a great improvement on the old one’. A letter from the Government of India on 25 April 1912 reported that the design had led to a rumour amongst Muhammedans that the elephant on the lower of the two collars on the King’s bust resembled a pig and that the Government were withdrawing the issue. On 16 May 1912 the Finance Department, India, noted that a slight alteration had been made in the punch at the Mint ‘so as to mark the heavy f lap of the ear and to raise the trunk upwards, with the result that not even the most prejudiced person could mistake the identity of the animal. The rumour did not spread to any extent and we have every reason to believe that it has died out’. (IOLR/F/6/945, File 3156 1911).
