Framed plaster model; diameter 8.75 ins (22 cms)
Commissioned by the Financial Department, India Office, for the Government of India
The proposal for a Peace Medal originated in India early in 1905. The Financial Secretary, India Office, enquired for what purpose the medal was required as it was the first of its kind. The Finance Secretary, Government of India, replied that it was for distribution at Colleges, schools and local exhibitions. Margaret Winser, of the Royal College of Art, London, was invited to prepare a model. Her exhibits at the Royal Academy in 1904 may have prompted the commission. When her design was submitted to King George V on 7 February’1906 he complained that the crown was top-heavy and he wished to be shown with the collars of the Star of India and the Star of the Indian Empire. He also suggested that his portrait should be copied from the current coinage. Two more models were submitted, one approved, and Miss Winser paid £44.2s. On 7 January 1907 the Finance Secretary, Government of India, approved and admired the design and by 11 December 1907 the medals in bronze and silver had been minted. (See L/F/6/865, File F 2659/1905).
