Plaster; 24 ins (61 cms) high
Presented by Kaye’s son-in-law, Sir Francis Whitmore Smith, K.C.I.E. 1894.
Replica of a bust in the possession of the family. Kaye served with the Bengal Artillery 1822-33. He retired from the Army in 1841 for a literary career and returned to England 1845. Entered Company’s Home Civil Service 1856. Secretary in Political and Secret Department, India Office, 1858-74. K.C.S.I. 1871. Retired 1874. From 1851 he published numerous histories of the British period in India; including ‘A’ ‘history of the war in’ ‘Afghanistan’ (1851); ‘The administration of the East India Company: a history of Indian progress’ (1853);’ Christianity in India’ (1859);’ India ancient and modern’ (1867);’ A history of the Indian mutiny’ (1870-80).
