Radhakanta Dev (K.C.S.I. 1866) was a learned Hindu scholar in Calcutta who did much to promote education in Bengal. At the same time he was a great advocate of the traditional values and was a critic of Ram Mohan Roy. He was author of the ‘Sabdakalpadruma’ (‘The Wishing Tree of Words’), 1827-57, a Sanskrit encyclopoedia which cost him forty years of labour and a large sum of money. An article on ‘The Vedic authority for the burning of Hindu widows’ was published by him in the ‘Journal of the Royal Asiatic Society,’ vol.17, 209.
