Plaster version of marble bust commissioned by the Asiatic Society of Bengal Calcutta marked 1843 and now on loan to the Victoria Memorial Hall, Calcutta. In vol. III of the Memoirs of William Prinsep (Mss Eur D1160), p.251-2, Prinsep records that in May. 1841, he 'was at this time employed in Weekes' (the successor to Chantrey) studio in assisting him to complete the bust of my brother James ordered for the Asiatic Society in Calcutta which had begun to be modelled by Chantrey from a post mortem cast but which had no resemblance whatever to him. I produced all the sketches I had of him including a good chalk drawing by Chinnery made of him while giving us a lesson in chemistry and which was a capital sketch and which was of first assistance to Weekes in producing the bust.' This is presumably the version referred to by Prinsep.
Prinsep served in Bengal from 1819-38. Secretary, Asiatic Society of Bengal 1832-38. He was a great scholar interested in chemistry, mineralogy, meteorology, numismatics and antiquities. He deciphered the Kharoshthi and Brahmi scripts.
