Inscribed on back: ‘H.T. Colebrooke. Member of the Supreme Council of Bengal 1807 to 1812. Chantrey sc. 1820’
Commissioned by the East India Company
The Company paid Chantrey 120 guineas for this bust. A replica, made by Henry Weekes in 1838, is in the rooms of the Asiatic Society of Bengal, Calcutta. The Royal Asiatic Society, London, has another marble copy, probably also by Weekes.

Colebrooke served with the East India Company 1782-1814. He was member of the Bengal Council 1807-12, President of the Asiatic Society of Bengal 1807-14, Director of the Royal Asiatic Society 1824. He was a great Sanskrit scholar and wrote on the Vedas, Sanskrit grammar, law, philosophy, algebra, astronomy, botany, geography and Jainism. In 1818 he gave his collection of Sanskrit manuscripts to the East India Company’s Library.
