Presented by Sir George Birdwood, c.1876
Model for the head and shoulders of the statue by Matthew Noble, presented to the City of Bombay by the Gaekwar Khande Rao of Baroda and unveiled by Lord Northbrook on 29 April 1872. Sir George Birdwood had originally placed the commission and after Noble’s death, he purchased the original bust from his widow. This bust and a number of similar ones (such as those in the Peers’ Library, Palace of Westminster, the Institution of Civil Engineers, at Birmingham and in Lord Ellesmere’s collection) followed as a result of Noble’s statue of the Queen, dated 1854, in the Manchester City Hall.
