Thornton was the pioneer in the systematic collection and publication of Indian statistics. He was on the staff of the East India House 1814-57, and head of the Statistical Department 1846-57. He published several works including ‘A history of the British’ ‘Empire in India (1841-58),’ and ‘A gazeteer of the territories under the Government of the East India Company’ (1854).
