Presented by General Briggs to the India Museum, 1871
Iqbal al-Daula Muhsin ‘Ali Khan was the son of Shams al-Daula Ahmad ‘Ali Khan and grandson of Sa’adat ‘Ali Khan, Nawab of Lucknow, 1798-1814. He visited England in 1838 to put forward his claim to the throne of Oudh. Having failed, he spent the rest of his life in Turkish Arabia. He was the author of ‘Iqbal Firang’ and was a well known figure in Baghdad. In 1882 he was granted a Grand Governorship of the Star of India. Eight sketches were made by an invalid lady living in the hotel where he was staying in 1838 and published as ‘The King of Oude, his brother and attendants’ ‘sketched while on their visit to England by a lady’ (London, nd). Two other paintings by Smart are known - a portrait of General Briggs and the Parsi, Sir Jamsetji Jijibhai, at the Oriental Club, London.
