Classical undraped bust
Bronze; 25 ins (63.5 cms) high

Bequeathed by Col. R.V. Buxton, December 1953
Woolner modelled two busts of Lord Lawrence in 1871. The first was treated in the classical manner without drapery. A copy of this in bronze was commissioned by Francis William Buxton, son-in-law of Lord Lawrence, for his wife just after her father’s death in 1879. On her death it passed to her son, Col. R.V. Buxton, who bequeathed it to the India Office Library.
A second bust was modelled with a cloak round the shoulders and decorated with the Star of India. This was carved in marble in 1880 for Westminster Abbey. Another marble version dated 1882 is in the National Portrait Gallery (no.2111), presented by Lord Lawrence’s son, Sir Herbert A. Lawrence, 1926.
Woolner also made a model in 1871 for a statue of Lord Lawrence. This was cast in bronze and erected in Calcutta in 1875.
Exhibited: National Portrait Gallery, ‘The Raj’, 1990, no.474.
