The Burning of the Kent, East Indiamen, 1825. Painted 1897.

This incident occurred in the Bay of Biscay on 1 March 1825. On the left the Kent is seen in flames; on the right the ‘Cambria’ of Falmouth, whose master, William Cook, rescued 547 persons. In the foreground are ships’ lifeboats, one inscribed ‘Cambria, Falmouth’. People struggle in the water, and a woman and child are descending from the Kent by a rope.

This event was a popular subject: William Daniell, Thomas Luny and Thomas Butterworth all depicted it (see National Maritime Museum archives).
