Warren Hastings (1732-1818), Governor-General of Fort William, 1773-85. Made 1790.

Marble 22 ins (56 cms) high, on its own marble column.
Inscribed on back: ‘Warren Hastings Esqr. MDCCXC. T. Banks R.A. Sculpt.’
Presented by Lady Murray Anderson, widow of Admiral Sir David Murray Anderson, 1949
This bust was originally at Daylesford House standing on a column supplied by Banks. It was bequeathed by Warren Hastings to his step-son Sir Charles Imhoff. It then passed to Warren Hastings Anderson and then to Admiral Sir David Murray Anderson, whose widow presented it to the India Office Library.
Banks made two busts of Warren Hastings, of which this was the first. The second is now in the Government Art Collection. Hastings sat for it for five days in February 1790 and it was reproduced in marble, bronze, terracotta and plaster. Hastings paid 70 guineas for the bust and five casts on 14 April 1791 (see F410). A bronze cast is in the National Portrait Gallery (no.209) dated 1794.
