Melvill entered the Company’s Home Service in 1808. Auditor of the Indian Accounts 1824; Chief Secretary, 1836-58; Government Director of Indian Railways at the India Office, 1858-61. F.R.S., 1841; K.C.B., 1853.
Another portrait of Melvill by J.J. Napier is in the National Portrait Gallery (4825) where he appears to be an older man.
