Three-quarter length portrait facing front. Lady Melvill is seated against a dark background and wears a black dress and bonnet with white strings. Her left hand rests in her lap and she holds a white handkerchief in her right.

Presented by her grandson, Col. James Lister Melvill, 1938.
Lady Melvill was a daughter of Revd. William Sellon and was married on 9 May 1815 to Sir James Cosmo Melvill (see F667). Napier also painted a portrait of her husband which was exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1858 and is now in the National Portrait Gallery (4825). The present painting appears to be a version of the painting in the National Portrait Gallery (4825A).
