Brian Houghton Hodgson (1800-94), c.1890
Three-quarter length, seated in an armchair, the head turned three-quarters to the left. He has rough white hair, moustache and beard and is wearing a red D.C.L. gown over a dark suit. His hands are resting on the arms of his chair.

Hodgson served with the East India Company in Bengal 1818-44, spending almost the whole of his service in Nepal. He went back to India in a private capacity to continue his researches and lived in Darjeeling until 1858 when he returned to England. He made vast collections of geographical, linguistic, architectural, ethnographic and natural history material relating to his official duties and to his work on Indology and Buddhism. He presented these materials to a number of libraries and museums including the India Office Library and the Royal Astatic Society.
