Dr. Alexander Russell, c.1730
A half-length portrait. The subject is seated against a brown background facing right, holding a long clay pipe in his right hand. He wears a brownish-black velvet cap, a dark blue jacket, brown waistcoat and white cravat.

Presented by Miss A.A. Russell, 1958
This painting was accepted by the Office as a portrait of Claude Russell (1733-1820) who served in South India from 1752 to c.1782. In view of the inscription ‘Aged 79’ this would date the portrait to 1812. The costume, however, is in the fashion of the early eighteenth century, as also is the style of the painting. It is more likely, therefore, that the subject is Claude Russell’s father, J Russell, and that family tradition had confused the identity of the sitter.
