General John Nicholson (1821-57)
Bust portrait; his hands resting on the hilt of his sword. He is wearing the Sutlej campaign medal without bars (1845-46) and the Punjab Campaign medal without bars (1848-49). Posthumous portrait, c.1867.

The painting is a copy of the top half of a posthumous portrait by J R Dicksee in the County Museum, Armargh- Another copy by c.Vivian In the East India and Sports Club is reproduced in L J Trotter, ‘The Life of John Nicholson’ (1898), Frontispiece.

Nicholson served with distinction in Afghanistan, Kashmir and Sind; took part in the 2nd Sikh War; commander of the Punjab moveable column during the Indian Mutiny; killed while leading the assault on Delhi. Brigadier General.
