The Marquis of Salisbury was Secretary of State for India from 1866-67 and 1874-78. He believed in a forward policy in Afghanistan and established a British Agent at Herat. He was later Prime Minister from 1885-86, 1886-92 and 1895-1902.
A bust by W. Theed Junior made in 1875 is at Hatfield House.
