Inscribed: ‘Gandhi, J.H. Amschewitz, Nov, 1931’ and in pencil on the reverse ‘Gandhi, study from life, London, Nov 1931’.
Oil on hardboard; 10.75 by 8 ins (27.2 by 20.5 cms)
Presented to the Department of Oriental Manuscripts and Printed Books, formerly of The British Museum, by Mr. Horace G Alexander in 1970, in trust as a gift to a public collection, and transferred to the India Office Library and Records in 1983.
Exhibited: Mahatma Gandhi Centenary Exhibition, The British Museum, 1969; National Portrait Gallery, ‘The Raj’, 1990, no.552.
This portrait study of the Indian political leader and social reformer was made during the course of Gandhi’s visit to London in 1931 to act as the plenipotentiary representative of the Indian National Congress at the Second Round Table Conference.
