Portrait of Sir John Withington Adams (1764-1837), c.1820-5.
Three-quarter length standing to right, his right hand holding his hat, his left on his hip, in military uniform. He wears the badge of the Companion of the Bath pinned to his left breast. An Indian landscape visible beyond the terrace.
Signed ‘W Havell’ lower left, and inscribed on back: ‘Genl. Sir John Whittington Adams G.C.B. d. 9th March 1837.’ An attached label reads: ‘Genl. Sir John Withington Adams G.C.B. died in Bengal 9th March 1837.’
Oil on board, 26.8 by 21.9 cms.

Exhibited Reading Museum and Art Gallery, ‘William Havell 1782-1857,’ 1970, no.52.
Adams entered the army in 1780, and in 1809 rose to command his regiment, the 2/10th N.I., on active service in Central India; C.B. 1815; held commands in Kumaon, Nagpur and the Deccan. Took Chanda in 1818, commanding the Divisional army of the Deccan and then the 3rd Infantry Brigade at the siege of Bharatpur in 1825-6. Commanded the eastern frontier 1826, then Agra and Muttra frontier 1826, and Sirhind Division 1828. Colonel of the 16th B.N.I. (formerly his old regiment the 2/10th) June 1828. K.C.B. 1831, G.C.B. 1837, the year he died at Sabathu. For another portrait, see F880.
