View up Old Court House Street towards St Andrew’s Church, Calcutta. Artist(s): Fraser, James Baillie (1783-1856)
- Scope & Content:
-
View up Old Court House Street towards St. Andrew’s Church, 1819-20.
Oil on canvas, 58 by 84 cms.
Purchased 1988.
Literature: M. Archer and T. Falk ‘India Revealed: the Art and Adventures of James and William Fraser 1801-35,’ London, 1989; J.P. Losty, ‘Calcutta City of Palaces’ (London, 1990), pp.93-94, pl.20.
Although unsigned, this view closely resembles Plate 12 from Fraser’s Calcutta aquatints, which is taken from closer to Tank Square. The details in the oil of adjutant birds, bheesties, carriages etc, recall the details filling the Calcutta ‘Views’. For Fraser’s watercolours of Calcutta, formerly at Longleat House, see Toby Falk, 'From watercolour to print: James Baillie Fraser and his views of Calcutta', ‘Under the Indian sun: British landscape artists’, ed. P. Rohatgi and P. Godrej (Bombay, 1995), pp.107-20.
