North side of Kaitee hill near Ootacamund, with Toda huts and villagers. Artist(s): Barron, Richard (c.1798-1838)
- Scope & Content:
-
North side of Kaitee hill near Ootacamund, with Toda huts and villagers, 1835.
Inscribed on reverse, now relined: ‘North side of Kaitee Hill Ootacamund Neigherries. R.Barrron. No.13.’
Oil on canvas, 45 by 60 cms.
Purchased 1989.
Barron spent a short while in the Nilgiri Hills in 1835, and a series of seven of his charmingly naive watercolours were published in 1837 by Robert Havell under the title ‘Views in India chiefly among the Neelgherry Hills.’ No watercolours or other oils by Barron are known, but the inscription on the back of this one suggests another twelve at least.
The Kaitee waterfall is the subject of Plate VI of the engraved views, while the Todas appear in two other plates.
