Self portrait. A small half-length portrait, the subject gazing over his spectacles, his right hand holding a ‘hookah-snake’ and the left his artist’s palette. Artist(s): Zoffany, Johann (1733-1810)
- Scope & Content:
-
Self portrait, c.1800-5.
A small half-length portrait, the subject gazing over his spectacles, his right hand holding a ‘hookah-snake’ and the left his artist’s palette. A chair-back appears behind him, so that he is apparently painting seated, but his easel is out of view. On the wall behind is part of a framed painting in the classical style of a young couple, with an easel on the right.
Oil on canvas; 33 by 30.5 cms.
Purchased 1989.
The work appears to be a very late self portrait, certainly later than any of the other known Zoffany self portraits. Two of these were painted in Italy (1772-9) and are still there in Florence and Parma, while an earlier one of c.1759 was painted while Zoffany was still in Wurzburg, Germany. Three self portrait drawings of about 1775, 1782 and 1795 are in the British Museum, Ashmolean Museum and National Portrait Gallery respectively. Zoffany in this painting appears to be between five and ten years older than the latest of these drawings. He stopped exhibiting at the Royal Academy in 1800.
