Arms of the East India Company. Painted plaster-cast of the original in St Matthias Church, Poplar. The coat of arms formed a ceiling boss, and shows the arms of the original Company, with three ships in full sail
- Scope & Content:
-
Arms of the East India Company, c.1654.
Painted plaster-cast of the original stone roof-boss in St. Matthias Church, Poplar.
Presented by Sir George Birdwood, 1902.
The church, formerly known as the Poplar Chapel, was built in about 1654 on ground given by the East India Company. It served as a chapel for their almshouses nearby and for the local community, many of whom were in the Company’s employ.
The coat of arms formed a ceiling boss, and shows the arms of the original Company, with three ships in full sail, although the artist has by a slip reversed the lions and fleur-de-lys in the upper panel.
