Villagers on a country road, Nasik, Western India, 1891-2.
Inscribed indistinctly on the reverse: ‘Nassick [...] India’ and in another hand: ‘This picture was painted by George Howard 9th Lord Carlisle in the winter 1891-92. It hung in his wife’s room at Castle Howard till April 1922 after which it was given by their daughter Aurea Fredeswyde Howard in [...] to her sister in law Sibyl Clare Chapman whose father and grandfather & other Waces and Bylthes built roads through the desert in India whereas she builds one for [....] 1944.’
Oil on board, 14 by 23 cms.
Purchased August 1993.
Lady Aurea Fredeswyde Howard, b.1884, was the Earl’s third daughter and married as her first husband Captain Denyss Chamberlaine Wace in 1923.
