Double portrait of a young couple, she dressed in flowing white muslin seated playing a square piano, he in civilian clothes standing over her, his right elbow resting on the plinth of a column, both looking out at the spectator, apparently on a terrace with a view to woodland and distant hills.
Signed and dated: ‘T. Hickey 1786.’
Oil on canvas, oval: 51.5 by 32 cm; in original frame, 60.5 by 51 cms.
Purchased 1994.

The identity of the couple is not known, but the date of the picture makes it one of the several which he painted in Calcutta on his arrival there in 1784. A pair of oval half-length portraits of two army officers dated 1788 (Archer 1979, nos.128-9) are very similar in style and execution.
