Head and shoulders portrait of General John Withington Adams (1764-1837), Bengal Army, facing to right, wearing the star, collar and badge of the G.C.B., and the Seringapatam medal. Artist(s): Melville, William (fl. 1830-1847)
- Scope & Content:
-
Head and shoulders portrait of General John Withington Adams (1764-1837), Bengal Army, facing to right, wearing the star, collar and badge of the G.C.B., and the Seringapatam medal
Signed on the reverse: ‘W.Melville pinxt’.
Oil on canvas, 68 by 56 cms.
Purchased 1995.
Few recipients of the Seringapatam medal rose to the rank of G.C.B. and the portrait has been identified both by eliminating other claimants and by comparison with a portrait of Adams (F834) by William Havell taken earlier in Calcutta 1820-5, which reveals great similarity in the obviously thinning hair, the nose and jawline. For Adams see F834. He retired to Sabathu in the Simla district, and was created G.C.B. on 10th March 1837, the day after his death. The slight misalignment of the subject’s chest with his badge as compared with his medal, suggests that the badge was added posthumously.
