- Scope & Content:
-
The East India Company's coat of arms, c.1730.
Wood, carved, painted and gilded. 130 by 152 cm
After 1709 the Company adopted the arms granted to the ‘New’Company in 1698, incorporating the royal arms and cross of St. George on the central shield, which is surmounted by a turbanned casque and acanthus scrolling and supported by two lions rampant each bearing the flag of St. George. Beneath is the motto: ‘auspicio regis et senatus Angliae,’ refering to the charters granted to the Company by act of Parliament.
The coat of arms was originally placed on a pediment above the Chairman’s seat in the the Director’s Court Room at East India House, Leadenhall Street, and at the sale of the contents in 1860 was put up for auction and sold for £7.10.0. It was later acquired by Louis Forbes, a retired Madras Civil Servant, who presented it to the Secretary of State for India in January 1891. It was placed near the Council Chamber of the India Office in King Charles Street until 1968.
