D., H.
Relief profile portrait of James Silk Buckingham (1786-1855), facing left.
Buckingham spent his youth at sea, and reached India in 1815. In 1818 he started to publish the ‘Calcutta Journal,’ which took such a very anti-government line that his publisher’s licence was revoked and he was deported from India. He returned to India after the reform of the press laws, and thereafter travelled and published widely.
Cast bronze; circular, 17 cm diameter.
Inscribed: ‘HD’ (as a monogram) ‘1852 London’; and signed: ‘J.S. Buckingham.’
Purchased 1999.
Note: The artist is unrecorded in C Eimer’s ‘British Commemorative Medals and their Values’.
