Gold ring with hinged locket front given to Dr. John Young Smith by Lady Susan Ramsay. Locket contains a lock of hair and watercolour portrait of Lord Dalhousie. Inscribed 'JYS from SGR Dec 19th 1860'.

A gold ring with a hinged locket at the front. Inside the locket there is a small watercolour portrait of James Andrew Broun-Ramsay, the First Marquis of Dalhouse (1812-1860), and a lock of hair. The ring was presented on the year of his death by Dalhousie’s daughter, Susan Georgina Ramsay (b.1837), to Dr. John Young Smith (b.1821). The ring is inscribed, ‘JYS from SGR Dec 19th 1860’.
Note: In 1844 Dalhousie petitioned Smith for service as a surgeon in Bombay, ‘being well acquainted with his Character, Family and Connexions’ (L/Mil/9/390, f.337), substantiating that the two men were close acquaintances.
