Octerlony is wearing the badge of the GCB, awarded in 1816 for his services in the Anglo-Nepal War. Lord Hastings invested Ochterlony with the GCB on 20 March 1818 at a grand ceremony in camp at 'Terwah' on the upper reaches of the Gogra where he had gone for hunting. This is about 30 miles north east of Lucknow which he had left on 10 March. Ochterlony arrived in camp from Jaipur on 19 March. He left on 22 March to go back to Jaipur and certainly via Lucknow. Home was court artist to Nawab Ghazi al-Din of Avadh from 1814-1827. The portrait would have been painted in Lucknow in 1818 immediately after the bestowal of the insignia of the GCB by Hastings.
