George Gidley Palmer was born in Topsham, Devon in 1830, son of Bartholomew Gidley Palmer and Charlotte Hayman. In 1851, while employed as an apprentice engraver in Exeter, he married Catherine Mary Redman. He became a printer and stationer, but was bankrupt by 1863. In 1871/1872 he went to India, leaving behind his wife and seven children.
On 5 November 1872 he began working in the Surveyor General's Office at Calcutta as an engraver who specialised in 'hill etching'. (IOR/V/24/4307, 1871-2, p.9 and 1876-7, p.12.) In 1888 he became the Head Engraver in the Surveyor General's Office. In 1891 he left Calcutta and returned to his family in Exeter, where he died in 1905.
