Indian Medical Service brooch awarded to Harold Rothery Nutt (1877-1953)

Oval shaped gold brooch set with blue enamel, green and red glass, and diamonds. Crown set with diamonds and red coloured glass at top. Mercury's staff at centre of oval. 'HONI SOIT QUI MAL Y PENSE' written on a blue enamel oval surrounding the staff. 'INDIAN MEDICAL SERVICE' written across the bottom, on a ribbon shaped strip of blue enamel. Gold pin and clasp at back. This brooch was probably presented to Harold Rothery Nutt at the time of his appointment as Surgeon-General with the Government of Bombay.
Height: 1.7 cm. Width: 1.4 cm.
Harold Rothery Nutt was admitted as a Lieutenant into the IMS on 27 June 1901. By 1921 he was Professor of Surgery at King George's Medical College, Lucknow. He worked his way up to the post of Surgeon-General with the Government of Bombay, and retired in April 1935.
Harold Rothery Nutt's application for admission into 'Her Majesty's Indian Medical Servie', dated January 16 1901, is held at IOR/L/MIL/9/422/28. His service record from 1921 to 1935 is at IOR/L/MIL/14/69130
