‘Carduelis carduelis’
Original inscriptions:’ Carduelis caniceps Vigors. From Mr. Johnsons Collection of Mss. etc’
Further inscriptions:
Artist:
Medium: Watercolour
Size: 272 by 218 mm.
Note: If we can infer that the inscription refers to the collection of Richard Johnson, who was in India from 1770-90 and whose fine oriental miniatures and manuscripts were purchased by the Company, it may well prove to be the oldest bird drawing in the Library. It appears to be by an Indian artist, perhaps from Lucknow, where Johnson spent some years. (see Mildred Archer’s ‘Natural History Drawings Catalogue’, p.101-02). The drawing seems a slightly later version of those in the Impey collection, and was possibly acquired by Richard Johnson in Calcutta before his departure in 1790.
