Hardwicke Collection
96 drawings in an album, depicting birds from Srinagar, Kumaon (U.P) and Betul (C.P). Collected by Thomas Hardwicke during expeditions made to the Himalayas and to Betul between 1794 and 1803
- Scope & Content:
-
Ninety-six drawings in water-colour depicting 96 birds from Srinagar and Kumaon (U.P.) and Betul (C.P.), bound in a volume measuring 17 by 13.75 inches.
These drawings were collected by Thomas Hardwicke (1755-1835) during expeditions made to the Kumaon and Garhwal areas in the Himalayas and to Betul in the Central Provinces between 1794 and 1803. A paper describing his travels in Garhwal in 1796 and entitled 'Narrative of a journey to Sirinagur' was contributed by him to ‘Asiatick Researches’, VI, 1801. (For Hardwicke, see Archer's Natural History Drawings in the India Office Library, pp.8-10.)
The paper on which the drawings are made has 1794 and 1801 watermarks. Each folio is inscribed in Urdu giving the name of the bird, its size and weight and the area from which it was collected.
The drawings were purchased from a London dealer in December 1891 and although there is no inscription connecting them with Hardwicke, other evidence proves that they were originally part of his collection.
