Album of 33 drawings of landscapes in Kulu, Lahul, Zanskar and Ladakh
- Scope & Content:
-
33 drawings (33 folios) of landscapes in Kulu, Lahul, Zanskar and Ladakh, c.1863.
Inscribed on title page in ink: ‘Views in Kooloo, Lahoul, Zanskar and Ladak.’ Also inscribed with titles in ink.
Water~colour; size of volume, 18 by 14 ins.; size of drawings, 14.5 by 10 ins. Purchased 7 September 1954.
Note: It is not known who made these drawings but the style of painting would suggest a date in the eighteen-sixties. Although the number of Europeans visiting the area at this time was limited, topographical and trigonometrical surveys were proceeding and one of the officers engaged on these surveys may have made them. W.H. Johnson was in the area (see ‘Report on his journey to Ilchi, the capital of Khotan, in Chinese Tartary’, ‘Journal of the Royal Geographical Society’, xxxvii, 1867, 1-47). Captain H. H. Godwin-Austen made a survey in 1863 (see ‘Notes on the Pangong Lake district of Ladakh, from a journal made during the survey in 1863’, ‘Journal of the Royal Geographical Society’, xxxvii, 1867, 343-63). He refers to an English traveller, Mr. Turner, whom he met, and who had visited the Pangong Lake and sketched it. Robert Shaw who wrote ‘Visits to High Tartary and Yarkand’ (London, 1871) visited the area in 1868.
