Note: The East India College at Haileybury, Hertford, was designed by William Wilkins, who also built the National Gallery, University College, London, Downing College, Cambridge, and part of King’s College, Cambridge. Haileybury College was opened in 1809 for the training of the Company’s servants in England. Students had been temporarily housed from 1806 to 1809 in Hertford Castle. In January 1858 the college was closed and the buildings remained empty until the present school opened there in 1862. Wilkin’s design played an important part in the development of the college campus.
