Purchased 14 October 1957.
Note: Lady Canning died at Barrackpore (Bengal) in 1861. This painting must have been made from a miniature or photograph after her death. See also the Canning memorial volume (Mss Eur D661) of photographs, newscuttings, letters and souvenirs of Lady Canning compiled by Emily Anne Theophila Clive Bayley, wife of Sir Edward Clive Bayley.
