Water-colour drawing of the camp of Marquis Wellesley at Kanpur (Uttar Pradesh) by Maria Ward (fl. 1802) 21 January 1802. In the foreground are British soldiers and sepoys, and a cavalcade of an elephant and two camels.
Inscribed on front in ink: ‘Maria Ward. Jany 21st, 1802’; on back in ink: ‘The tents of His Excellency the most noble Richard Marquis Wellesley K.B. Governor and Captain General of British India, as pitched at Cawnpore in the province of Oude, and presented by His Excellency to His Highness Sadut Ally, Nabob of Oude. Jany 21st, 1802, being the Anniversary of His Highness's accession to the Musnud of Oude.’
