Gilbert was a keen race-goer. When he was a General, aged 65, and went to receive Lord Dalhousie near Lahore in 1849, he had just won a racing cup on one of his own horses. See W. Lee-Warner, ‘The Life of the Marquis of Dalhousie’ (London, 1904), i, 276.
