Capturing elephants in Ceylon. c.1825. Military officers supervising the rounding up of elephants. A group of officers are seated in a ‘machan’. Below stands a headman or local landlord with attendants carrying palm-leaf fans, the insignia of his status. Villagers and military officers stand in the foreground watching the capture of the elephants. Wooded hills in the background.
