Marquis Wellesley, mounted on a white horse, accompanied by officers in red uniforms, reviewing his bodyguard at Ballygunge, near Calcutta. Coat of arms on mount. July 1805. Artist(s): Pichon, Jean-Jacques (fl. 1780-1805)
- Scope & Content:
-
Marquess Wellesley, mounted on a white horse, accompanied by officers in red uniforms, reviewing his bodyguard at Ballygunge, near Calcutta. In the middle of the parade ground is a Union Jack; on either side thatched cantonments. Coat of arms on mount. July 1805.
Inscribed on mount in formal lettering: ‘View of the Cantonement of the Governor General’s Bodyguard. Commanded by Captain H.C. Montgomery, at Baloo-Gunge, near Calcutta.’ ‘Dedicated to His Excellency the Most Noble Marquis Wellesley.’ In cursive handwriting: ‘Peint par son très humble serviteur J.J. Pichon.’ Repeated on another strip mounted below also in formal lettering, except for: ‘Commanded by Major F.A. Daniell, at Baloo-Gunge,’ etc.
Water-colour; 14 by 25.5 ins.
Foster Catalogue, no.232. Purchased 1904.
Reproduced: V.C.P. Hodson, ‘Historical Records of the Governor-General’s Body Guard’ (London, 1919), 50.
Note: The Ballygunge cantonment was built in 1801 for the Governor-General’s Bodyguard. The original drawing, which is in a private collection in London, has only the first inscription and was presumably inspired by Montgomery’s taking over as commandant in 1800. Captain Francis Andrew Daniell succeeded him as Commandant, September 1802 to February 1806, and was appointed Major in 1805, when doubtless Pichon got out an unsold version of the Montgomery drawing and pasted down a new inscription over the original one. For a portrait of Daniell by Robert Home, see F869.
