A native officer and a sepoy of the l0th Native Infantry. The officer is seated, his left hand resting on his sword. He wears a red coat with white trousers and puttees. The sepoy is dressed in the same colours but has a non-regulation quilted coat or poshteen and carries a blue blanket or mat on his back. He stands holding a Snyder or Enfield rifle and has the bayonet hanging from his belt. c.1870.
Inscribed on front: ‘10th N.I., G. Crawford’.
Water-colour; 17.75 by 13 ins.
Circumstances of acquisition unrecorded.
Note: The 10th Native Infantry was stationed at Dum-Dum near Calcutta but it may have had a detachment in the Hills, which would account for the poshteen.
