John Elphinstone, 13th Baron (1807-1860). Half-length, side view, wearing a check waistcoat. Artist(s): D'Orsay, Count Alfred Guillaume Gabriel (1801-1852)
- Scope & Content:
-
John Elphinstone, 13th Baron (1807-1860). Half-length, side view, wearing a check waistcoat. c.1837.
Inscribed on front in pencil: ‘Elphinstone’.
Pencil; 8.25 by 5.5 ins.
Circumstances of acquisition unrecorded.
Note: Elphinstone succeeded his father in 1813; entered the Royal Horse Guards 1826; Lord-in-Waiting 1835-37; Knight Grand Cross of Hanoverian Order 1836; Governor of Madras March 1837 to September 1842, during which time he encouraged the practice of going to the Nilgiri Hills; returned to England 1845 and again became Lord-in-Waiting. Governor of Bombay December 1853 to May 1860. During the Mutiny he provided troops for disaffected areas. G.C.B. 1858.
Many of D’Orsay’s profile sketches of his contemporaries were published in lithograph form by John Mitchell of Bond Street. Among them is one of Lord Elphinstone, exactly resembling the present portrait except that he is shown with a moustache; this he seems to have removed on being appointed to the Governorship of Madras.
