Unidentified battle scene in hilly country between East India Company troops and Indian forces; probably an engagement during the Mysore Wars. At the bottom, an unfinished title ornamentation showing two British soldiers of flank companies pulling back a curtain. c.1790.
Pen-and-ink and water-colour; 25.5 by 38.75 ins.
Purchased 10 March 1961.
Note: The sundial hats of the Native Infantry, the Shipton hats of the Artillery, the presence of bullock artillery, and the lack of a St. Patrick’s cross on the flags in the battle scene suggest a date in the 1790s. Horse artillery were first used between 1801 and 1806, and the St. Patrick’s cross was introduced in 1801.
