Note: See also WD750, Mackenzie collection, and a line engraving based on the drawings, P788, inscribed: ‘To Major William Popham, and the rest of the Officers and Soldiers, on the 4th August, 1780, surprised and took possession of the celebrated and hitherto deemed impregnable Fortress of Gwalior; this view of that remarkable Place (engraved by the Order and at the expense of the honble Warren Hastings, Esq. to perpetuate the memory of so important an Event) is with the highest Admiration of their Military Virtue. Inscribed by J. Rennell. The Original Sketch’d on the spot by Capt J. Hicks, the Drawing made by Mr Hearne. Engraved by Wm. Byrne, the figures by J. Hall. Published according to Act of Parliament by James Rennell 5th April 1784’. The present drawing appears to be a worked up version of WD750.
