Lord Clive, emerging from a tent supported by two men, stares in terror at the ghost of Omichand. Beyond the group a man wearing breeches hangs by his wrists from a palm tree
- Scope & Content:
-
Lord Clive, emerging from a tent supported by two men, stares in terror at the ghost of Omichand. Beyond the group a man wearing breeches hangs by his wrists from a palm tree. 1773.
Inscribed: ‘Ld. Clive & the Ghost of Omand Chund’.
Grey wash; 16 by 10 cm.
Purchased 1978.
Note: The drawing may be the original for a satirical engraving, printed in reverse, published in 1773 when Clive was under attack in Parliament for corruption. In 1757 Clive tricked the banker Omichand by showing him a document promising to pay him 30 lakhs of rupees on condition he remained silent over the plot to depose Nawab Siraj-ud-daula and replace him by Mir Jafar. No reference to this payment was included in the official treaty with Mir Jafar and it was rumoured that Omichand had lost his reason as a result. In fact he continued to do business with the British.
