Album containing 49 laid down drawings of landscapes in Bundelkhand and one loose portrait. They appear to have been made on a tour, partly down the Dhasan river, between December 1853 and March 1854. Artist(s): Carmichael, Emily (fl. 1854)
- Scope & Content:
-
Album containing forty-nine laid down pencil drawings of landscapes in Bundelkhand and one loose portrait. They appear to have been made on a tour, partly down the Dhasan river, between December 1853 and March 1854 although the numbering and dating of the drawings is confusing. Some seem to have been mounted in the wrong order from two sketch books with inscriptions on the reverse and inscriptions in a different hand on the mounts. It is possible the numbers refer to the sequence of days in the tour.
The album contains the bookplate of Sir James Colquhoun of Luss and the flyleaf is inscribed ‘Drawings of India done by my beloved sister - Emily Carmichael - given to Sir James Colquhoun Bt. 1905’. Several members of the Colquhoun family also served in India. The younger daughter of Sir James Colquhoun (1844-1907), Dorothea Helen Mary Elizabeth Sutherland, b.1885, married Evelyn George Massey Carmichael, a member of the Carmichael of Balmedie family, in 1908.
Album 56 by 38 cm. In each case the inscription on the reverse of the drawing is given after that on the mount.
Purchased 1980.
