The Governor-General’s House at Barrackpore. Artist(s): Locker, Edward Hawke (1777-1849)
- Scope & Content:
-
The Governor-General’s House at Barrackpore.
Inscribed: ‘E.H. Locker 1808’ and on original mount: ‘The Governor General’s villa at Barrackpore on the river Hooghley. Drawn on the spot by Edward Hawke Locker, 1808’.
Water-colour; 29.3 by 41.2 cm.
Purchased 1981.
Note: The house, commandeered by Wellesley as his country retreat, originally had three large rooms opening onto a verandah. Sir George Barlow, Governor-General from 1805 to 1807, converted the verandah into a series of smaller rooms. George, Viscount Valentia, described it as being pleasing, well adapated to the climate and the rooms on a very ample scale, see ‘Voyages and Travels’vol. I, London, 1811, p.65; and J.P. Losty, ‘Calcutta City of Palaces,’ London, 1990, p.80-81.
