Two houses and a distant view of the Islamabad river, Chittagong. The artist, wearing army uniform, stands in the foreground with a servant.
Inscribed on reverse: ‘West view of Doctor Wilson’s and Col. Ellerken’s House called Clarmont and Bungalow, also a view of the Islamabad River and distant Eastern Hills - Chittagong - drawn by Captain Crockatt, Engrs, Bengal Establisht. 1801’.
Water-colour with bodycolour; 40 by 52 cm.
Purchased 1983.
Note: Edward Ellerker (1739/40-1802) Major-General, 3rd Bengal Regiment, was at Chittagong from the mid 1770’s. Robert Wilson, Civil Surgeon, applied for military duties in 1789 but was advised that his long residence at Chittagong had resulted in limited medical experience, and the chances of an appointment to a military hospital were not encouraging.
